Pakistani Independence Day Marked With Calls To Fight Terrorism - RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has marked his country's Independence Day with a call to defeat terrorism.

Speaking at an event in Islamabad on August 14 to celebrate Pakistan's 66 years of independence, Sharif said, "Our will is strong and we have the capability to beat the terrorists."

Sharif said Pakistan's people should work to make the country a "land of peace and stability."

Army chief General Ashfaq Kayani made similar remarks in his speech on August 13, saying there might be disagreement on strategies to combat terrorism "but surrendering is no option."

Pakistan's tribal regions along the border with Afghanistan have become havens for terrorist groups such as the Taliban and their allies, including Al-Qaeda and the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan.

Thousands have been killed there in the last 12 years.
