PM approves draft for LG system in Punjab - South Asian News Agency

LAHORE, (SANA): Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif has approved a proposed draft for the local bodies system in Punjab to hold elections on non-party basis in Punjab. However, there would be no restriction to contest the elections with party identification. This was decided in a meeting headed by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Saturday.

Addressing the meeting, the PM said that the democracy would be strengthened by empowering local bodies institutions while education and health would be on top priority.
The meeting also approved to give representation to youth on special seat while age limit to contest on special youth seat would be 21 to 25 years.

The sources said that the government would table the proposed bill in the Punjab Assembly on Monday.

They said that the prime minister applauded the special committee, which prepared the bill.

Nawaz Sharif said that devolution of powers to the local bodies level would strengthen the democracy in Pakistan. He said that health and education sectors would be the top priority of the government.
Meanwhile, the age limit to contest local bodies elections has been increased to 25 years once again. Earlier, a special committee of the Punjab Assembly had reduced the age-limit to 18 years.
